Testosterone stimulates immunity (1-2-3). The reduction in the secretion of androgens induces the reduction in the production of lymphocytes supporting the appearance of infections and cancers.
In 2009 a publication shows the lengthening of lymphocytes telomeres under the influence of the androgens (5).
The protective action of androgens on white blood cells of positive HIV men (reduction of the cellular destruction from 34 to 52%) was already shown in 1997. ( download pdf.) (4). This study suggest that the use of anabolic drugs for the treatment of AIDS-associated wastingsyndrome would not only improve their general and nutritional condition, but might also prevent the loss of CD4+T-cells through an inhibition of apoptosis.
Therapy with androgens can be of high importance among patients suffering from the AIDS when they are weak, stressed and deprived of lymphocytes (4)

Interferon-α is used as therapy in certain cancers and chronic hepatitis. This very effective treatment has a side-effect decreasing considerably the production of testosterone (6) (download pdf.) and causing a nervous breakdown.
In 1997 a study of patients carrying HIV and treated whith interferon-α shows that patients in complete remission of Kaposi's disease recover after treatment, the rates of serum androgens comparable with the rates before to the treatment whereas during the treatment with interferon-α these rates decrease considerably (7) (download pdf.).
Questions remain outstanding. It would be interesting to remake the study by determining the production of the androgens among patients carrying HIV and treated with interferon-α by the pool of androgens study. Daily production of androgens could be insufficient among patients who present a repetition or recurring repetitions of the Kaposi's disease what it impossible to show with the simple study of androgens'serum rates.
